    Boren Awards Federal Employment Seminar

    Information about the Event

    The Boren Awards is pleased to host the Virtual Boren Federal Job Information and Recruitment Seminar on October 13-15, 2021. The Seminar will provide a unique opportunity for you to learn more about employment in the federal government, and to meet and network with other Boren Scholars and Fellows, as well as staff from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) within the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) and the Institute of International Education (IIE).

    This website contains and will to be updated with information about the agenda, speakers, and FAQs, so please be sure to visit regularly. We look forward to seeing you at the event!

    Pre-Event Webinars

    NSEP will be hosting pre-event webinars focused on resume-building, crafting your narrative, and an interactive workshop with a special guest. More information to come!

    Dress Code

    Business or business casual. T-shirts, shirts with any writing on them, and hats are not be appropriate attire. Polos, blouses, and suits are all appropriate. On Friday, October 15, you will have the opportunity to meet with representatives of federal agencies and should dress in business attire as you would for a job fair or interview.

    Resumes

    During registration, you will have the opportunity to attach your resume for hiring officials to view and download. Please be prepared to have a PDF copy of your resume ready to be shared. Please refer to email communications from the Boren Events team regarding resume reviews that the NSEP Service Team will be hosting in the weeks leading up to Seminar.

    Technology

    A detailed user manual will be emailed to all attendees the week prior to the event with instructions on how to access the vFairs platform and its various components.

    The live sessions will be held on Zoom (linked directly through vFairs), and we strongly urge you to download Zoom if you have not yet done so and plan to update your Zoom web application immediately prior to the event to ensure you have the most recent version (desktop updates usually take no longer than 5-10 minutes). While some sessions will be designed in a presentation style, there will be sessions with opportunities for interaction. Please be prepared to go on camera and/or use your audio, so we recommend testing your audio and video functionalities and equipment, as well as your internet connection.

    Preparing for the Event

    Pre-Event Webinars

    On February 12 and March 5, the NSEP Service Team will host webinars to help you prepare for Boren Seminar. Please refer to your emails for more information. Both webinars will be recorded and will be available for viewing after the live session.

    • February 12 at 12pm EST: NSEP Resume Webinar (Email nsep@nsep.gov for the recording link)
    • March 5 at 12pm EST: Preparing for the Job Information Session (register via the link in your email)

    Is there a cost associated with attending Seminar?

    No. Your attendance is free of charge to you as it is a component of your Boren Scholarship/Fellowship.

    What if I can only attend partially?

    Attendees are required to attend all event days on March 8-10. If you have questions about attendance please send an email to BorenEvents@iie.org.

    I am not yet sure if I can attend, can I RSVP later?

    Please RSVP by Monday, March 1, 2021. You must register in order to attend the Boren Seminar event.

    I am unable to attend as a last-minute emergency came up. What should I do?

    You must inform the Boren Awards team should you be unable to attend after you register. Please send an email to BorenEvents@iie.org.

    What should I prepare ahead of time?

    Please see the “Preparing for the Event” tab for more information on resume workshops/webinars, resources, and other tips for preparing for Seminar. The page will be updated regularly so please check back in the weeks leading up to the event.

    I’d love to share photos of my time abroad on Boren! Is this possible?

    Yes please! We try to incorporate only real photos of Boren Scholars and Fellows in our promotional materials to depict the authentic experience and diverse destinations of the program to prospective applicants. Your photos will inspire future applicants! We hope you will share photos of your time overseas, especially ones that show you in the classroom or interacting with your local community.
